Searching Cases by Name
Use MCRSearch for a public Marion County magistrate record. The official search accepts a first name, last name, or case number. It begins with a CAPTCHA and terms screen, needs no account, and may return up to 30 records. A broad query can therefore yield several similar names. Match the case location, caption, filing date, and type before opening the detail.
- Open the official portal for the court level.
- Enter the last name and enough of the first name to narrow the list.
- Confirm that the result identifies Marion County and the expected case type.
- Open the likely record and validate it with the filing clerk when status matters.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last name | Text | Search input | Use the spelling on court papers. |
| First name | Text | Search input | Add it to reduce common-name matches. |
| Case number | Text | Alternative | Use the identifier from the magistrate record. |
Marion Circuit Search Uses WVPASS
WVPASS is the public search for the Circuit Court of Marion County. It requires registration and two-factor access. Its stated case coverage starts July 1, 1999. Browsing public case detail is free, while viewing or downloading public documents costs $0.25 per page plus any card fee shown at checkout.
The portal does not certify a download, permit bulk downloads, or refund a purchase from the wrong case. It allows one active session, times out after 60 minutes of inactivity, and keeps bought documents in Purchase History for 30 days. Call the Circuit Clerk if a needed public document is missing.
The official WVPASS landing screen identifies the right Marion County circuit route.

The account gate does not change the clerk's role as custodian of the original file.
Searching by Case Number
A case number works best in the system that issued it. Marion County circuit, magistrate, municipal, citation-payment, probate, and federal identifiers are not interchangeable. Preserve punctuation and leading zeros from the notice. Read the court name printed near [court-issued case number], then select its system. The research does not support inventing a local sample or publishing a real person's identifier.
A Citation ID and Payment Plan ID belong in the magistrate payment tool. They do not replace the Case ID used to locate the underlying docket. If the number fails, check transcription, court, county, and whether the file predates online coverage before changing formats.
Marion Magistrate Search Limits
MCRSearch is free and statewide, but it is not a document archive. It can show basic case data, charges, bonds, parties by role, civil judgments, events, and docket-entry descriptions. Underlying papers are not online. Call or visit the Marion Magistrate Clerk for copies.
The disclaimer says the Judiciary does not guarantee accuracy, completeness, or a full civil or criminal history. Narrow a crowded result with the case number, then validate the chosen file at 304-367-5330.
The official MCRSearch source is shown here.

Use it to locate a record, then use the clerk channel for the document itself.
What a Case Search Returns
A Marion County result is a set of fields, not a narrative account. A plea is not the judgment. A filing date may differ from an event date. “Reason Closed” can refer to one event rather than the full case. Read related fields together.
| Case ID | The identifier assigned by that court system. |
|---|---|
| Style / Parties | The caption or short description, not the full dispute. |
| Filed Date | The date the case or item was lodged. |
| Disposition | An outcome field best checked against the order. |
| Event Schedule | Event, date/time, room, location, judge, and reason closed. |
| Docket Entries | Record, filing date, code, description, and filed by. |
Marion Docket Codes Need Context
MCRSearch calls its chronological lines “DOCKET ENTRY.” Codes such as MGNCH for Notice of Hearing, MGMCT for Motion to Continue, and MGPAY for Payment are interface aids. Use the displayed description because a code alone is not a legal finding and can change.
- Docket entry
- A line for a filing, order, receipt, or event.
- Disposition
- An outcome or status field checked against the order.
- Related case
- A cross-reference that does not always mean consolidation.
- Closed
- A label whose scope must be read in context.
To confirm a hearing, read the event and later entries. To understand an outcome, request the order. To prove a Marion County record, ask the clerk for certification.
Statewide vs County Case Search
West Virginia provides statewide portals by court level, not one universal county database. Both can return Marion County cases, but their access and document rules differ. Municipal, probate, and federal files use other custodians.
| WVPASS | MCRSearch |
|---|---|
| Circuit and qualifying family records | Magistrate civil and criminal records |
| Account and two-factor access | CAPTCHA, no account |
| Free detail, paid public documents | Free detail, clerk supplies documents |
When Marion Searches Find Nothing
A blank result can reflect spelling, the wrong court, portal coverage, a city or federal file, delayed entry, sealing, confidentiality, or expungement. It does not prove no case exists. For a Fairmont ordinance matter, call municipal court at 304-366-9280, press 3. Probate starts with the County Clerk. Federal cases use PACER.
Older circuit files may predate WVPASS coverage. A magistrate search may have too many similar results. Check the issuing court, then ask the correct clerk whether the file is public, archived, delayed, restricted, or held elsewhere.
No result: Keep the question narrow and let the Marion County custodian identify the lawful route.
Access and Restricted Cases
West Virginia Code §49-5-101 protects juvenile records. Section 48-1-303 generally leaves domestic-relations orders public while keeping pleadings, exhibits, and other papers confidential. Trial Court Rules 10.03 and 15A.23 address restriction and sealing. Expungement under §61-11-26 can affect public visibility.
A generic entry may remain even when its paper is restricted. An authorized party should identify that role privately and ask the custodian what proof is needed. Never send an unneeded Social Security number, financial account number, full birthdate, password, or similar identifier.
Confirm a Marion Search Result
The Circuit Clerk is at 219 Adams Street, Room 211, Fairmont, phone 304-367-5360. The Magistrate Clerk is at 200 Jackson Street, Room 211, Fairmont, phone 304-367-5330. Call before visiting for a missing file, certified copy, current fee, archive request, or closure status.
A screenshot is not a certified Marion County record. WVPASS explicitly does not certify downloads, and MCRSearch does not post case papers. Trial Court Rule 10.04 and West Virginia Code §51-4-2 support lawful inspection and copies from the custodian, subject to restrictions and reproduction cost.

A careful confirmation request gives the clerk a court level, case number, document title, and date range. Ask for inspection, an ordinary copy, an electronic copy, or certification based on the need. For a WVPASS document, verify the case before purchase because the official FAQ states there is no refund for choosing the wrong case. Public document access differs from counsel-of-record access, so do not assume a fee exemption applies to every user or attorney.
Similar names do not prove identity, and a case style does not tell the full dispute. When a result matters for a filing, appearance, appeal, or correction of your own record, compare it with the entered order and the clerk's current register. This method protects accuracy without turning a Marion County index result into a claim that the public fields cannot support.
